How children really learn to count
Somewhere around the second birthday, most children start to chant: "one, two, three, four, five!" It is a proud moment, and it should be. But here is the surprise: that chant is a song, not counting. The road from reciting numbers to truly understanding them is longer and more interesting than most of us expect, and there is a beautiful, simple way to walk it at home.
When we curate toys for numeracy, we look for the same two things every time: quantity before symbol, and concrete before abstract. This guide follows that road from the first "one" to one hundred, and at the end you will find a set of free printables we made for it, including a large wall chart of the numbers 1 to 100.
Counting is not reciting
Real counting rests on a skill with an unglamorous name: one-to-one correspondence, saying exactly one number word while touching exactly one object. Children who chant to twenty will happily "count" five blocks and arrive at eight, because the song runs faster than the finger.
You do not need any materials for this stage, just slowness:
- Count stairs while climbing them, carrots while they go into the pan, buttons while they close.
- Touch each thing as it is named.
- Watch for the day your child insists on doing the touching. That is the skill arriving.
Quantity first, then the symbol
Children should handle amounts long before they meet written digits. An amount is real: you can hold three, feel that it is more than two, and see that it is one less than four. The digit "3" is just ink. Attach the ink too early and a child learns shapes without meaning.
So at this stage, keep it physical. Stack, thread, sort and hand over amounts: "give me two", "one more", "now we have four".
Marrying quantity and symbol
Once your child counts small amounts reliably, the written numeral finally earns its place. A classic exercise for this: numeral cards laid out in order, and something real counted out beneath each one, placed in pairs. The pairs quietly introduce odd and even, and the exercise checks itself, as you will see in the printables below.
Tracing materials belong to this stage too. Writing a digit with a finger before writing it with a pencil stores the shape in the hand, not just the eye.
The teens are the hard part (and Dutch makes it harder)
Every language hides the structure of the teen numbers. "Eleven" and "twaalf" give no hint that they mean ten-and-one and ten-and-two. And Dutch adds a famous trap: we say the units first. Vierentwintig is four-and-twenty, so a child hears "vier" and writes 42. If your child does this, celebrate it: it means they are listening carefully. The language is the confusing part, not the child.
The fix is to make ten visible. Show fourteen as a full row of ten and four more, every time, until the child sees through the word to the structure behind it.
🧮 The counting frame
Our Counting Frame is built for exactly this. Each row holds ten beads, split by color into five and five, so "fourteen" stops being a strange word and becomes something you can slide: one full row, then four. Fittingly, this style of frame (the rekenrek) is a Dutch invention.

And now, finally, the big chart. Around age four and a half to six, once counting to twenty is secure, a hundred chart changes the game. Ten rows of ten, always in the same place, so the patterns of our number system sit in plain sight. Think of it as a map, not a lesson: it does not teach by itself, but it lets a child look things up and check their own work, with no grown-up needed.
Hang it at your child's eye height, not yours. Then play:
Find it (4.5 years +)
The simplest game is the best opener.
- The ask: "Can you find 47?" Reading a two-digit number and locating it is the whole exercise.
- The trick: ask for the house number, their age, grandma's age. Numbers that belong to someone are found faster.
Before, after, between (5 years +)
Neighbor numbers are the hardest part of early number sense, and the chart makes them visible.
- The ask: "What comes just before 30?" "What lives between 45 and 47?"
- The benefit: the child can check every answer alone, by looking. No adult needed, no wrong answer that stings.
Walk a column (5.5 years +)
This is why the chart has ten numbers per row.
- The ask: read straight down: 4, 14, 24, 34. What changes? What stays?
- The benefit: the units digit holds still while the tens climb. This is the moment base ten stops being abstract.
🔵 Paint patterns with buttons
Give your child a bowl of buttons and ask them to cover every second number. Stripes appear. Cover every fifth: columns. Every third: a diagonal staircase walks across the chart, and most children gasp when they see it. Skip counting, multiplication readiness and pattern hunting, all in one quiet game.

The 55 button trick
Print and cut the number cards, then raid the button jar.
- Count out exactly 55 buttons together. That number is not an accident.
- Lay the cards 1 to 10 in a row.
- Place the right amount of buttons under each card, in pairs.
- Watch: if every card is right, the buttons come out exactly even. If any are left over, or the ten comes up short, a mistake is hiding somewhere on the mat, and your child gets to hunt it down. The material corrects; the parent just watches.
