You have registered your child for primary school and now want to know what to expect and how to prepare for this transition! This workshop is for international families who want their children (and themselves!) to feel ready for school in the Dutch education system.
The Ready for School workshop includes content specifically tailored for parents of children who are almost 4 years old. All ages are welcome as much of the material is applicable to children of all primary school ages. We will discuss the following topics:
-
Preparing your child for primary school (separation, independence, emotions)
-
Dutch education overview (explantation of primary & secondary systems, and highlights of each year group)
-
Communication with school & teachers
-
Multilingual learners (support & advocacy)
-
Sharing of resources (children’s books, support organizations)
The Ready for School workshop will address these topics and more, so bring your questions and a notebook. As parents and caregivers, we all want our children to have a positive school experience from the start. The more we know, the more we can effectively support our kids at school and at home. Join and find connection with other families who are also on this journey!
If you are interested in learning more about selecting a school for your child, the "School Choice in Amsterdam" workshop is designed to assist parents of children aged 0-3 in making informed decisions in that process. Please check the events calendar for more information.
About the presenter:
As a parent, teacher, and educational consultant, Isabel Cruz understands the challenges of navigating school systems from all angles. She moved to Amsterdam from the US in 2017 when her child was 4 years old. Two weeks after arriving, her child began attending their local basisschool with almost no knowledge of the Dutch language. Isabel has been an educator for 20 years and teaches and consults at international schools in Amsterdam and the surrounding area.
