The balance of choice and boundaries

Montessori Key Principles:
Freedom within limits

What is Freedom Within Limits?

This principle is the art of balancing a child’s desire for independence with the need for safety and order.

Children are given the freedom to choose their own work and move about the environment freely, but these choices are made within clear, consistent, and respectful boundaries.

Why is it important?

This approach allows children to develop self-discipline and make responsible choices. By having clear expectations, they feel safe and secure, which is essential for exploration and learning.

It teaches them to respect themselves, others, and their environment while building confidence in their own abilities.

How to apply it at home

Provide a choice of two

Instead of giving a completely open-ended choice ("What do you want to wear?"), offer two appropriate options ("Do you want to wear the blue shirt or the red shirt?").

Set clear, simple rules

Boundaries should be few, clear, and focused on safety and respect. For example, "We are gentle with our friends" or "We put our toys away when we are finished."

Follow through consistently

Consistency is key. When a limit is set, follow through respectfully and without anger. This helps your child learn to trust the boundaries you have established.

Model the limits

Show them how to do something correctly, rather than just telling them what not to do. "We walk slowly inside" is more helpful than "Don't run."
